With a tall and soared facade, the Cathedral of Lentini dominates the most important square of the city, resting on a beautiful mosaic carpet of river pebbles which embroider the atrium with beautiful geometric patterns.
The Church is erected on an early Christian catacomb complex of which, today, only the tombs said to be of three Saint brothers Alfio, Filadelfo and Cirino remain. The brothers were martyred in Lentini in 253 AD, under the Emperor Decio, by will of Tertullo the tyrant.
This is also the place where in 16th century the Collegiate Basilica, dedicated to the three Holy brothers and, destroyed by an earthquake in 1693, once stood.
Only the largest bell of the Ancient Basilica remains, now placed in the central loggia of the tower bell.
The current structure of the church was built between 1700 and 1750 by architect Vincenzo Vella. Throughout the 17th century, the church marked the boundary of the city’s urban center; beyond it, the countryside extended.
